Microsoft Cloud Service Outage Grounds Planes, Disrupts Flights

Services Restored

Reported Impacts on Banks, Airlines, and Media

July 17, 2024 - Bloomberg News reports that Microsoft has resolved a cloud services outage that had grounded planes and disrupted flight operations in the US. The outage, which was first reported around 11:00 am ET, had impacts on banks, airlines, and media companies, among others.

According to Microsoft's service health status page, the outage was caused by an issue with the company's Azure cloud platform. The page indicates that the issue was resolved at 2:11 pm ET.

The outage reportedly affected airlines including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and Southwest Airlines. The planes were grounded due to a lack of real-time flight information, according to media reports.

Several banks were also impacted, including Bank of America, Chase, and Citigroup. Customers were unable to access online banking and mobile banking services. The outage also disrupted media companies, including CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, which were struggling with intermittent streaming issues.

The outage has been resolved as of 2:11 pm ET, and all affected services are now operational.
